Annual Meeting/Other Public Works Opening
Public Works features Dan Funderburgh, Mike Perry, Sonnenzimmer and Seripop at the Andrew Rafacz Gallery.
Both in their art and their attendant values these artists work tirelessly to sustain cultural entities. They blanket space with meaning and convert square footage into bold proclamations. The music world reaps the rewards of Sonnenzimmer's subtle, painterly gig posters while the apparel industry appropriate's Mike Perry's electric zine hallucinations into backpacks and Nike dunks. Both Dan Funderburgh and Seripop explore the limits of spatial adornment, Dan through the design of delicately intricate wallpaper that balances Moorish mosaic with American op art, and Seripop via enormous street poster collages, a medium they have evolved from their monstrous rock posters and describe as "the 'skin' of a city, growing and shedding organically."
About
Public Works is an annual art show and speaker series that speaks to the enhancement of community and culture through creative occupations. It is a not-for-profit endeavor curated and managed by Someoddpilot and hosted by the Andrew Rafacz Gallery.
Art Show
The Public Works art show features designers and graphic artists who inhabit the increasingly narrow gulf between fine and commercial art. We curate a late summer show to highlight the bold and immediate work of artists established in the independent art and design communities whose very practices support the creative cultures surrounding them.
Speaker Series
The Public Works speaker series seeks to create a real, live knowledge base for making a life in the independent arts. We're bringing in internationally recognized artists and creative entrepreneurs to speak to what we know to be true: "Art makes work; work makes art."
Our guests will discuss the creation and continued success of their endeavor, introduce their work, and share stories relating to the work and their processes. Each speaker presents for 45 minutes followed by a question and answer period. The night is meant to educate and inspire, and to answer the basic questions "What do you do?", "How do you manage to do this?", and "What does this bring to the community at large?"
This is a free event.
Public Works is presented by Someoddpilot and Andrew Rafacz Gallery.
This event is sponsored by AIGA Chicago, Dupli-Graphic and DEMO.
