GALLERY SHOW: Transgressions/Transmutations the Book Rejiggered

The 23rd Atmosphere Group Gallery is proud to announce its new Show: Transgressions/Transmutations the Book Rejiggered

The Opening Night Reception is Friday, June 11 from 6-10pm. The show will run through July 17.

Although artists have physically altered and incorporated books into their work for decades—Buzz Spector comes to mind as one such pioneer--it seems only recently that the field’s popularity has grown so dramatically. It is with great pleasure then that we bring this group of artists together for this exciting and edifying show.

Hometown artists Darek Piech and Robert Furman join Lucinda Chapman from Lexington, KY, Mathew Hall from Salt Lake City and Robert Henry Mutterson II from Valhalla, NY.

While some see the “rejiggering” of books as a serious transgression of the social contract, bordering on the sacrilegious, these artists point out no viable book was harmed in the creation of their work. Rather they contend, they have afforded these books, treated by others as landfill-bound refuse, a transmutation into a long and productive second life. They do no worse, they argue, than the surgeon cutting and sawing a patient to save her life.
