Annual Meeting/Other Saki Mafundikwa Lecture
Saki Mafundikwa worked in New York City for a dozen years before returning to his home in Africa during 1998. He received a BA in telecommunications and fine arts from Indiana University and an MFA in graphic design from Yale University. Upon returning to Africa, he founded and is now the director of the Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts (ZIVA), the first graphic design and new media college in the country.
During this lecture, Mafundikwa will share his thoughts on the development of design in Africa, and how the spread of technology and new media may slowly be chipping away at the attitude that design is not a cultural priority. He believes that design education is the answer to the growing awareness of the importance of design as a tool for development.
